Three months after he said that he found a bag with $5,000 inside of it, in a parking lot, a Connecticut man has been arrested.
56-year-old Robert Withington is facing larceny charges after keeping the money.
The Trumbull police say that the bag had a distinctive bank insignia and was found outside of the same bank. Inside of the bag was money from the town’s tax department. It contained multiple documents showing the rightful owner of the money was the town of Trumbull.
Withington said that he didn’t steal the funds. Furthermore, he stated that he didn’t see anything in the bag naming who the owner was.
On May 30, 2023, the money had disappeared. A worker at the Trumbull’s tax collector’s office couldn’t locate the bag after getting to the bank to make a deposit.
Throughout the next upcoming months, investigators got search warrants, reviewed surveillance recordings, and questioned many people. They then concluded that the bag had accidentally been dropped outside of the bank, and Withington had picked it up.
When he was interviewed, authorities say that Withington admitted to being at the bank that day and picking up the bag. He told investigators that he didn’t think that he had to give the money back to the rightful owner.
On Friday, Withington was charged with third-degree larceny. This could lead to up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
He is set to appear in court on September 5.

That’s wrong, He didn’t steal it. He found it on the ground. Doesn’t matter if he figured out later who’s it was. They dropped it! Things happen. Nine tenths of the law. But to charge him that charge is wrong. The bank dude should’ve had a bag that had all the bags inside one locked bag so he wasn’t so careless! That’s his responsibility!!
