Next week, Katy ISD, in Katy, Texas, will vote on a new guideline that would make it mandatory for teachers and other staff to disclose to parents if their child comes out as transgender. They would also be required to tell parents if their child requests to be called a different pronoun while at school.

The debatable topic was discussed at a board meeting on Monday evening.

Those who oppose the guideline say this could lead to teachers outing trans students who don’t want to come out to relatives.

The guideline would also prohibit staff members from asking students which pronouns they prefer when referring to them. Additionally, students would have to use restrooms and locker rooms that correlate with their biological sex.

What’s more, the guideline would stop the inclusion of any information related to “gender fluidity” from being advertised or used inside of the classroom.
