On Thursday The Food and Drug Administration approved the first ever over the counter birth control pill in the U.S.

Opill comes in tablet form and uses a synthetic hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. The pill is made by Perrigo and based out of Dublin.

In a statement Thursday, the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research director, Dr. Patrizia Cavazzoni said “Today’s approval marks the first time a nonprescription daily oral contraceptive will be an available option for millions of people in the United States.”

She also added that “When used as directed, daily oral contraception is safe and is expected to be more effective than currently available nonprescription contraceptive methods in preventing unintended pregnancy.”

The pill will be available for purchase at drug stores, convenience stores and grocery stores, as well as online. At this time Perrigo has not released the pricing for the nonprescription drug but says it is expected to hit stores in 2024.

He also plans to make the pill affordable for everyone.
