On Wednesday, Montana became the first state to officially ban TikTok. This comes after Governor Greg Gianforte signed a bill prohibiting the downloading of the social media app into law.
Now, it is unlawful for app stores to provide users the choice to download TikTok and unlawful for the company to have business dealings in that state.
It is very likely that the new law will be questioned in court as some believe that their right to free speech has been violated. However, others have sided with Gianforte on the privacy restrictions.
“The Chinese Communist Party is using TikTok to spy on Americans, violate their privacy, and collect their personal, private, and sensitive information is well-documented,” Gianforte noted.
It has been said that although many agree with the new law, there is no set plan in place to monitor these restrictions.
If users in Montana are able to download the app, the business could be fined $10,000 for each violation. The Montana Justice Department would be in charge of monitoring that.
Although Montana is the first state to prohibit downloads and usage of the TikTok app, some bans have been implemented federally and state by state for government-managed devices and networks.
