26-year-old Jarrad Nathan is accused of shooting into the Fox13 TV station, in Memphis, Tennessee, on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities say that Nathan had first gone up to Fox13, stating that God had given him a message in regards to the Tyre Nichols matter that needed to be aired.
When he wasn’t permitted into the building because he had an AR-style weapon, he shot one time into the tv station. Afterwards, Nathan fled to a Ubee’s and enclosed himself inside. As he barricaded himself, he posted a Facebook Live recording, saying authorities would have to kill him if he couldn’t speak with the media.
Law enforcement officials surrounded the location and took Nathan into custody about two hours later with the assistance of negotiators.
No one was injured in the occurrence.
Nathan’s parents say that their son has been suffering from mental issues for many years. They added that after being shot eight times, close to two months ago, their son is desperately wanting help.
“I want the viewers to know that he is not a bad person at all…I think my son is crying out for attention because he needs some help. Anybody who would come to the news place and shoot…, that is a cry for help,” she said.
His mother added that she believes that Nathan’s mental issues began when he was 13 and that it has been a struggle to raise him every since.
Nathan has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
