Detective Troy Patterson, a New York City police officer who was in a coma for over thirty years, has died. He had been in a vegetative state subsequent to being shot in the head as a botched robbery occurred. He passed away on Saturday.
On January 16, 1990, Patterson was off duty when he was shot. He had been washing his vehicle in Brooklyn when three males confronted him. They demanded $20, and one of the males, a 15-year-old, fired a shot at him.
Because he sustained a horrible injury, Patterson was in a vegetative state even though supporters had wished that he would regain consciousness one day.
“The NYPD mourns his loss and extends our continued support to his family & friends,” a statement on Twitter read.
The three attempted robbers were all sentenced to prison in connection to the shooting, and they have all been released.
