Relatives Of Deceased Teacher Sue Dallas Independent School District For $20 Million
On January 8, 2021, a Dallas special education teaching assistant passed away. This came three days after she suffered a vicious attack by a special needs student.
Her family has now filed a federal lawsuit, stating that the Dallas Independent School District violated her rights, and put Sharla Sims in harm’s way.
56-year-old Sims was a special education teaching assistant for DISD at H. Grady Spruce High School during the 2020-2021 school year. On the day in question, she had been working with a student with behavioral and learning disabilities. The student was known to be aggressive and attacked Sims all of a sudden.
After the attack, Sims received medical attention as she sustained pain in her abdomen. She was placed in the hospital and died on January 11, 2021, from her wounds.
The student’s records show at least four other occurrences of physical aggression prior to Sim’s attack. Two of them had been against Sims. However, DISD leaders let the student remain in the classroom with Sims without more safety precautions taken.
Now, the relatives of Sharla Sims are asking for a full investigation of the Dallas Independent School District for what they say has been a cover-up in connection to Sharla Sim’s death.
The family and their lawyer says that relatives were never informed that an attack happened, and because the district hadn’t taken action, Sims died unexpectedly.
“There should be assurances provided to the community and to the city of Dallas, that something like this will not happen again,” said Attorney B’Ivory LaMarr.
