Just prior to Christmas, a winter storm swept around the country, resulting in the deaths of 37 people and power loss for thousands of others.
Throughout the weekend, hundreds of National Guard troops had to save individuals who had been stranded in the snow. This mostly occurred in New York state which is one area that has been impacted the most.
“This will go down in history as the most devastating storm,” stated Kathy Hochul, the governor of that state.
Because of high winds and low visibility, Buffalo Airport has shut down until Tuesday. In Eerie County, driving was banned until 7 a.m. on Monday.
Now, officials are concerned that there could be an increase in the number of deaths.
“There are people who have been stuck in cars for more than two days; there are people in homes that are below freezing temperatures,” one official said.
The National Weather Service has said that the storm lead to more than two-thirds of the nation in a Winter Weather Warning or Advisory.
They are now telling people to wrap up tightly as very cold temperatures are expected to last for many more days.
