Athena Strand’s Father Files Lawsuit Against FedEx, Dallas-Based Contractor Who Hired The Suspect In Her Killing
On Tuesday, the father of the late Athena Strand, 7, filed a lawsuit against the man charged in her killing, FedEx, and the contractor who hired the suspect.
Court documents were filed in Wise County, Texas. Strand’s father is looking for $1,000,000 in damages and a trial by jury, as well.
Records note that Tanner Horner admitted to kidnapping and killing Athena. This was subsequent to unintentionally striking her with the van he was operating. He stated that he had been backing up after he had made a delivery to her home when he hit her. The delivery he had made had been a Christmas gift for Athena.
Strand’s father has filed a lawsuit against Horner, FedEx, and Big Topsin, Inc., the contractor for whom Horner worked for. The lawsuit claims that the businesses were neglectful in employing Horner and didn’t put safety guidelines and procedures into place.
Throughout the nation, FedEx uses 6,000 contractors that pickup packages and deliver them with their employees.
A representative for FedEx spoke on the matter.
“The employees of these service provider companies are subject to criminal history background checks as a part of the delivery eligibility process. As is common across the industry and considered standard employment practice, the background check is administered by a third party.”
It has been noted that Horner doesn’t have a criminal history.
