30-year-old Dorothy Annette Clements, from Virginia, has been charged with murder in relation to the death of her 4-year-old son.
On Monday, Clements was indicted by a grand jury in Spotsylvania County.
On May 8, 2022, Clements’s son died after experiencing a medical emergency two days prior to that. This occurred at a residence in the 5400 block of Jamie Court.
After an investigation by a Child’s Victim Unit, it was found that doctors discovered increased levels of tetrahydrocanninol, or THC, the active chemical inside of cannabis that creates a “high.”
Investigators later were notified that the child had consumed a great amount of THC gummies. Doctors informed authorities that the child’s death could have been avoided had medical attention been provided right after ingestion.
The sheriff’s office disclosed that the 4-year-old had ingested gummies that contained “delta-8 THC.” This is one of over 100 cannibinoids created naturally from the cannabis plant. However, large amounts are not found in the cannabis plant.
The FDA has noted that delta-8 THC hasn’t been reviewed or approved by the agency for safe use “in any context and should especially be kept out of reach of children and pets.”
Clements was taken into custody on Thursday and has been placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
