Pregnant Woman, Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison For Protest Remarks, Will Have Her Punishment Reconsidered

1.3kviews

A pregnant, Brittany Martin, 34, is serving four years in prison for her actions and racial justice protests. Now, her punishment will be reconsidered.

Martin, from South Carolina, was charged and found guilty of breaching the peace in a high and aggravated manner because of remarks that she made to authorities at a protest. Because of growing worries about her and her unborn child, Martin’s attorneys have now asked for a lesser sentence.

An online petition has been launched by Black Lives Matter and is requesting Martin’s release.

In 2020, Martin moved from Iowa to South Carolina to protest the police-linked killing of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. She was also there to support her son and brother-in-law who both were fatally shot by police.

Body cam footage shows Martin at the police protest but not her attacking or even coming in physical contact with police. Later on, she was acquitted of inciting a riot, but the jury didn’t return a verdict in the case of her threatening officers’ lives.

Martin was only found guilty of breaching the peace which is punishable by 30 days in prison and a $500 fine. Because prosecutors said that it was a high and aggravated crime, that was punishable by a 10-year sentence.

In comparison to the Jan 6. riot, and the 850 people charged with federal crimes in that matter, only 330 of those people pleaded guilty and had a lesser sentence that Martin.

Whitney Martin, Martin’s sister, stated that the pregnant woman couldn’t get comfortable and has lost 12 pounds even though she is with child. To add, she was recently placed in solitary confinement for not cutting her dreadlocks as she was instructed to do. Her attorneys have called it, “racially biased.”

  1. If we as a people ever reconstruct unity, the equality will increase. We don’t all have to agree on everything, but standing united we can do better.

  2. Amen to standing united, as it should be. This action against this woman is highly egregious and should certainly be addressed.
