After racist text messages were sent between two officers, the little city of Vincent, Alabama, has decided to disband its police force.
“What do y’all call a pregnant slave?” questioned user “752” which has circulated social media by another officer. One unidentified person responded back with question marks.
“BOGO Buy one, get one free,” user “752,” replied.
The messages were first revealed on Tuesday which is the same day that the Vincent City Council met to discuss the issue.
Prior to that, James Srygley, the police chief, stated that the department had performed an internal investigation and that effective consequences had been set forth.
However, on Thursday, Syrgley was actually named as one of the officers that had been suspended. The assistant chief, John Goss, was suspended, as well. He was determined to be user “752.” The other officer that exchanged text messages with him hasn’t been named.
Afterwards, the city council voted to get rid of the whole department.
The third officer in the department, Lee Carden, resigned through a text message hours after the vote.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office released a statement criticizing the officers’ behavior. Their office is assisting the residents with emergency law enforcement service.
“This has torn this community apart. It doesn’t matter what color we are as long as we do right by people,” said City Councilman Corey Abrams.
