Four people are dead, and two have been wounded after a gunman began shooting inside of a food court at a mall.
The incident occurred on Sunday night, around 6 p.m. Authorities had been contacted several times about an active shooter at Greenwood Park Mall, in Greenwood, Indiana.
Detectives think the unidentified gunman was fatally shot by a 22-year-old bystander who saw the shooting occurring.
The guman is said to have killed two males and one female. A 12-year-old girl’s parents had transported her to a medical facility with minor wounds. Another victim remains in the hospital in stable condition.
Police say that the gunman used a long-gun rifle even though they hadn’t recovered a weapon from the scene at the time of the reporting.
Eventually, SWAT evacuated people from the mall and stated there was no other threats in the building.
Police are working to determine the shooter’s motives as they talk to witnesses.
The person who shot and killed the gunman has been praised.
“This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the city of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation,” said Mayor Mark Meyers.
“…the real hero is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in the food court. He was able to stop this shooter almost as soon as he began,” he added.
