On Tuesday, a lawsuit between Mo’Nique and Netflix has been settled in Mo’Nique’s favor.
Mo’Nique claimed Netflix retaliated against her by refusing to negotiate a low offer extended to her in 2017. Netflix offered her $500,000 for a one hour stand-up special.
Mo’Nique was offended because other comedians such as Dave Chappelle, Amy Schumer, and Chris Rock make well over 10 times that for their comedy specials.
After that low offer, Mo’Nique called for a boycott against Netflix for discrimination. Mo’Nique believed if she accepted the original offer, she’d be setting a poor example for Black female comedians following in her footsteps.
Mo’Nique filed a lawsuit against Netflix in 2019, accusing them of racial and gender bias.
Netflix argued that their offer was fair, and they shut down potential negotiations only after Mo’Nique issued a public protest.
Judge Andre Birotte Jr ruled in the comedians favor that Netflix indeed retaliated against Mo’Nique.
While the terms of the settlements have not been disclosed, this is a win for Mo’Nique.
