Two California officers have died after being shot in the line of duty Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. at a motel located on the 10300 block of Garvey Avenue.

Officers were responding to a stabbing call but when they arrived they were met with gunfire.

The El Monte police officers were immediately transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The two officers ultimately succumbed to their injuries later that evening.

Authorities also exchanged gunfire and struck and killed the suspect. His identity had not yet been released.

Authorities later released a statement saying, “There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers. It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families. We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring support we have received in the last few hours.”
