A man shot a barber after allegedly being unhappy with the haircut he received.
Vernie Dickens, 33, was charged with first-degree assault, unlawful weapon use, and two counts of armed criminal action.
Kansas City police responded to a call of shots fired outside of Dráque’s Barber Shop on June 2. When officers arrived they found Dickens being restrained by bystanders.
Witnesses say that Dickens was angry about a haircut he received from the barbershop the day before. When he returned the following day, June 2, to get it fixed, the same barber was not there.
Dickens spoke to the owner, Dráque Murff, and began complaining. After Murff told him to have a seat, Dickens became irate and started yelling. The situation escalated to where both suspect and victim were outside of the shop. Murff allegedly began to run away from Dickens out of fear, when Dickens fired two shots at him, striking him from the back.
Dickens then stood over Murff and attempted to shoot him a third time, but the gun malfunctioned. Customers intervened and held Dickens down until police arrived.
Murff was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his gunshot wounds. Although one bullet passed inches from his spine, he is expected to recover.
Dickens is currently in custody at the Jackson County jail. His bond is $75,000.
