A woman is said to have had her hands up before she was shot several times by police, in a store parking lot, in Kansas City.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that authorities were trying to apprehend a man and a woman in connection to a carjacking. A car matching the description of the vehicle was found at a Family Dollar.
A witness says that she heard officers screaming, “Get out of the car!” A man then got out of the vehicle, fled, and hopped a fence as three police officers went after him.
The woman, Leonna Hale, 26, then exited the car, with her hands up, and was demanded to get on the ground. However, she told police that she wasn’t able to get on the ground because she was pregnant, the observer stated.
Authorities continued to tell her to get down at which time she told them that there was a gun in the car. As the woman began to back up towards a fence, police moved closer to her with their weapons out.
When she ran three steps away, police shot five times, the witness added.
In a recording, Hale is seen on the ground with blood on her shirt. Officers then placed handcuffs on her. She was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Police say that a gun was located near the location where the woman was shot. The male suspect was later arrested and wasn’t hurt.
State troopers are investigating the incident.
