“Casanova Scammer” Tricked Women Out Of $1.3 Million Through Dating Apps

Brian Brainard Wedgeworth, 46, is a Florida man known as the “Casanova Scammer.” Last week, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud, mail fraud, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft.

Wedgeworth is said to have had 13 aliases. On multiple dating apps, the scammer would state that he was a surgeon. He would then trick women into giving him money, expensive items, and bank information. He pleaded guilty to 25 counts connected to scamming his victims.

Between October 2016 and March 2021, Wedgeworth was able to manipulate the women that he met on the sites. These sites include Match.com, Christian Mingle, and Elite Singles.

30 women were victimized as he received money and property from them. He is said to have scammed the women out of about $1.3 million altogether. He would “sweet talk” the women into giving him money and purchasing watches and jewelry for him, authorities said. They also say that he would tell the women that he had no money after paying off debts that they had. He would tell them that his bank accounts couldn’t be used because of a medical malpractice lawsuit, as well.

Wedgeworth confessed to causing or wanting to cause the women financial loss.

On August 8, 2022, he will be sentenced. Wedgeworth could spend up to 20 years in prison for wire fraud and mail fraud. He could also get 10 years for money laundering and 2 years for the aggravated identity theft charge.
