22-Year-Old Man Killed By Police After His Parents Called To Get Help For His Mental Illness
Quiten and Mya Cullins called police in Atlanta, Georgia, hours prior to their son, Nygil Cullins, 22, being killed.
The mother stated that Nygil was suffering from mental health issues and was having problems on Wednesday. Therefore, she called 911 in order for him to be transported to a mental health facility.
“My biggest fear when I got on the phone with them- I said ‘He’s an African-American male. Please, make sure whoever shows up is trained and knowledgeable, so when they deal with my son, I don’t have to worry about him being killed,” she said.
The mother added that she waited for several hours for the police to arrive. She attempted to get Nygil to stay inside of his apartment, but he left.
“He left. Not even 30 or 40 minutes later, he’s on the news,” Mya Cullins said.
Atlanta police say that just before 7 p.m., they responded to a call of a man who was causing a disturbance with a gun. This was at a Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse on the 3100 block of Piedmont Road.
Authorities discovered Cullins sitting at a bar. Observers stated that he had been consuming liquor out of a bottle and had become unruly.
When Cullins wouldn’t leave the location when asked, he started to tussle with an officer and a security guard.
The officer tried to shock Cullins with a Taser, but it wasn’t effective. The security guard then took Cullins to the ground.
Police say that’s when Cullins pulled out his gun and shot the security guard. The police officer then fatally shot Cullins.
The security guard was transported to a medical facility and was listed in stable condition.
Now, Cullins’ parents are demanding that officers are trained better when they interact with those with a mental illness. They say the police failed their son, and their son would probably be alive today if officers had come to his apartment just moments earlier.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the matter of the use of deadly force and then, that report will be reviewed by the district attorney in Fulton County.
If he had mental illnesses why did he even have a gyn?
If had was suffering fron mental illness why did he have a gun? Where/who sold it to him?
Anyone can get a gun these days unfortunately. This is why defunding the police is so important everywhere. If they had been properly trained to deal with mental illness or perhaps had a psychiatric therapist on the ride the young man could have been probably talked down. Just sad that he lost his life so young.

I do agree that certain officers need more training to deal with those that are mentally handicapped or suffer from a mental illness.
The guy shot a security officer. Wtf do y’all expect to happen? He gets an ice cream cone??? He knew right from wrong. If he didn’t then he needs to be in a facility where he can be watched 24/7. Obviously his mom couldn’t handle him.
