An Indiana man charged with his wife’s murder, won a local Republican primary election this week while behind bars. If he isn’t convicted at trial, he could end up in office.

40-year-old Andrew Wilhoite, received 60 of the 276 total votes for Republicans on the Clinton Township Board. The other two GOP candidates in the race received 110 and 106 votes respectively. There were only three candidates running for the three seats.

Wilhoite is currently in the Boone County Jail, being held without bond. He has been charged in the death of his 41-year-old wife, Elizabeth Wilhoite.

Police say Wilhoite struck Elizabeth in the head with a blunt object, knocking her out. He then put her in a vehicle and drove to a creek near their home to dump her body there. Her body was discovered by police, submerged in 3 feet of water on March 26.

Court records indicate that Elizabeth filed for divorce on March 17 after being married for 12 years. However, police have not released a motive for the killing.

If Wilhoite gets convicted of a felony before the general election on November 8, he would automatically be removed from the ballot.

His jury trial is scheduled for August 29.
