Mother Won’t Face Time In Jail After 5-Year-Old Daughter Passed Away, Weighing Less Than 8 Pounds
In June 2020, Porscha Mickens’ 5-year-old daughter died. She had only gained two pounds since birth.
On Monday, it was decided that the Georgia mother won’t face any jail time after taking a plea deal.
Mickens was first accused of starving her daughter to death. She was given 20 years probation as she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Prosecutors had said that Kylie Mickens was brought to a medical facility, weighing a little more than seven pounds and “looking like a mummy.”
In October 2020, Porscha and her husband, Jerrail Mickens were apprehended and faced charges of felony murder and first-degree cruelty to children.
Jerrail was involved in a motorcycle accident and died in November. However, the case against Porscha was still in motion.
Corinne Mull, her lawyer, has continuously said that Kylie had an unusual chromosomal deficiency called ‘1p36’ deletion syndrome. She said that it caused the child not to put on any weight. “This is a medical issue, not a starvation problem,” she said in 2020.
Although no jail time is required, Superior Court Judge C. Andrew expressed that “it should go without saying that the court’s sentence doesn’t lessen the value of Kylie’s life.”
