Police Officer Dies After Suffering Brain Injury from Bee Sting

A Pennsylvania police officer who suffered a rare reaction to a bee sting last year has died.

Hatboro Police Officer, 35-year-old Ryan Allen, passed away on Thursday while surrounded by his family and friends.

Allen was a member of the Montgomery County Drug Task Force. He was a canine handler who helped found the department’s k9 unit.

The news comes several months after a bee sting led to a brain injury and coma. Doctors initially thought Allen would recover and be sent home.

Last month, however, they had to break the news to his family that he would not recover.

Doctors learned that the anoxic brain injury Allen was suffering was more sever than they thought. Allen received the brain injury as a result of going into cardiac arrest from the bee sting. The swelling in his brain then subsided and a recent MRI revealed that his brain had shrunk. This resulted in portions of his brain no longer being there.

Following the disheartening news, the Allen family had him discharged from rehabilitation on hospice care. He was then able to spend his remaining days at home.

Allen’s final moments were shared with his family and loved ones.

The tragedy has brought an overwhelming amount of support from the Hatboro community. In total, more than $139,000 have been donated to help cover his medical expenses.
