Jeffrey Merriweather Jr. died in 2019, in Fulton County, Georgia. Now, his family is looking for restitution after the man’s remains were somehow lost in the mail and never found.
After a suspected shooting, the 32-year-old’s body was found somewhat decomposed after many weeks. His cause of death was never officially confirmed, his father stated.
The body was shipped from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office to a special facility that would determine how he died. Then, the body was lost.
Three years later, his relatives have taken legal action to hold accountable those who are responsible for losing the body.
Reports indicate that the shipment arrived in Austell, Georgia, but couldn’t be located after that. The family stated that no one has contacted them about the issue, including neither the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office nor FedEx. The medical examiner stated that they were investigating when questioned by reporters.
However, Merriweather Jr.’s family said too much time has passed. They would like laws to be changed to ensure that this doesn’t happen to any other family.
“This is a lot of negligence on the part of FedEx, who had the remains at their location. Then, all of a sudden, lose it? How do you do that with remains? This is like the worst nightmare a person can go through,” Merriweather Sr. expressed.
