Police say that on Monday, Alabama Deputy Sheriff Cedric Law, 26, was shot five times by his father. The incident occurred while he was off-duty and involved in a domestic disturbance.

The dispute resulted in the father’s death on Friday afternoon. His name hasn’t been released.

Around 3 p.m., Law was traveling in a vehicle with his mother and brother. Because his mother had just been involved in an altercation with his father, authorities had advised her to get a warrant and an order of protection.

When the father saw them driving and doing just that, he hit the family’s car, then got out with a gun.

Law then exited his mother’s car and instructed her and his brother to drive off. As he tried to get his father to put the gun away, he was shot several times. The deputy then fired back several rounds.

Law’s father was declared deceased on the scene. Law was taken to a medical facility and was listed in stable condition.

“We’re not immune from domestic violence in law enforcement. They were trying to do what was right. His mother was reaching out for help. She went over and picked him up. He was off duty,” said the Montgomery County sheriff.

He added that Law is recovering and will be released from the hospital soon.
