A former nurse faces prison time after accidentally injecting a 75-year-old patient with the wrong drug.
RaDonda Vaught, 38, administered a fatal dose to Charlene Murphey, 75. She has been found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult.
Murphey was reportedly claustrophobic, and was prescribed the sedative for her anxiety. Vaught could not find the sedative in the drug dispensing cabinet to administer. So instead, she submitted an override for a different drug with the same effect.
However, she injected Murphey with a dose of vecuronium. Vecuronium is a drug used in anesthesia that likely prevented Murphey from being able to breathe.
Vaught’s defense was that she was honest about the mistake she made. She has been apologetic and cares about Murphey’s family.
The prosecution’s argument was that Vaught’s actions were negligent. They claim she had many chances to stop herself from making the fatal mistake that led to Murphey’s death.
Vaught has had her medical license revoked in addition to being criminally charged.
The American Nurses Association issued a statement defending Vaught. They expressed concerns that punishing medical mistakes could severely harm the rate at which mistakes are honestly reported.
