Marijuana Legislation Bill May Go To The House Floor For A Vote Next Week

1.4kviews

As soon as next week, the proposal to legalize marijuana at the federal level will be ready for a House floor vote.

On Thursday, the House Rules Committee stated that they will have a hearing on Monday in reference to the bill. This is the last step prior to it being considered on the floor. The measure has been put on a list of bills that will be discussed.

The “Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act” would rid cannabis from being categorized as a federal controlled substance. It would also remove criminal consequences related with the drug.

Additionally, a federal tax would be put into place on marijuana sales to help pay for initiatives in neighborhoods that are negatively affected by drugs.

“I have long believed that the criminalization of marijuana has been a mistake. The racially disparate enforcement of marijuana laws has only made it worse. This includes serious consequences, particularly for communities of color,” stated House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler.

At least 37 states have permitted cannabis use for medical purposes. 18 states have allowed cannabis use for non-medical purposes.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer had already said that he would push to lift the federal prohibition on cannabis.

“As a majority leader, I can set priorities. This is a priority for me.”
