A leaked email is causing controversy at Applebee’s.

Wayne Pankratz’s internal email was uploaded to Reddit. He is the executive director of operations for American Franchise Capital. They own 50 Applebee’s in the Midwest.

He is said to have told managers that their workers and applicants are suffering financially. Thus, he believes it could be helpful for the company.

“Most of our employee base and potential employee base live paycheck to paycheck. An increase in gas prices cuts into their disposable income,” Pankratz wrote.

In the Midwest this week, gas prices were close to $4 per gallon.

“Inflation continues to climb and gas prices continue to go up. That means more hours employees will need to work to maintain their current level of living,” he added.

The email suggested that people needed two jobs to make a comfortable living. He wants to ensure that new hires are started with lower earnings.

Kevin Carroll, the Chief Operations Officer at Applebee’s, issued a statement. “This is the opinion of an individual, not Applebee’s. We understand that the franchisee who owns and operates the restaurants in this market has placed the individual on leave.”
