A tractor-trailer’s inspection at a federal establishment in San Diego uncovered nearly $3 million worth of methamphetamine. It was found inside a shipment of onions, authorities say.

On February 20, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection K-9 Unit hinted at the shipment of onions. That’s when authorities located almost 1,200 small packages of meth.

A 46-year-old, unidentified Mexican national was apprehended for the supposed narcotic smuggling try at the Otay Mesa port-of-entry commercial vehicle location.

The packages of meth were formed into small globes with white covering it. It was made to be camouflaged in with the onions. The packages weighed a total of 1,336 pounds and are said to have a street value of $2.9 million.

“While we have certainly seen narcotics in produce before, its unusual for us to see this level of detail in the concealment,” an official stated.
