Anti-Lynching Bill Passed In The House; Three Republicans Vote Against It

On Monday, the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act passed the House with a vote of support of 422-3. The bill will make lynching a federal hate crime that would result in a 30-year prison sentence.

The bill was named in honor of Till who was kidnapped, tortured, and shot in the head at the age of 14. The incident occurred in 1955 after he was suspected of whistling at a White woman in a store in Mississippi. 120 years ago, then- Rep. George Henry White had first introduced the legislation.

Although it received a lot of support, three Republicans-Reps. Andrew Clyde (Ga.), Thomas Massie (Ky.), and Chip Roy (Texas)- opposed the bill.

“Today, we acknowledge this disgraceful chapter in American History, and we send a clear message that such violent actions will not be tolerated in this country,” stated the House Judiciary Committee Chairman.

Between 1882-1968, over 4,700 lynchings occurred. It is reported that Black people were lynched the most because White perpetrators usually used that method to torture Black people.

The greatest number of lynchings happened in Mississippi where two White men beat and shot Till who was Black.

The men were acquitted of the murder by an all-white jury. However, years later they admitted to the killing.
