In opening arguments in the murder trial of Austin Stevens, prosecutors say that the man caused fatal injuries to his 10-month-old child, Zara Scruggs.
Stevens, 31, is an ex-youth football coach from Norristown, PA. He is facing charges for the death of his daughter and sexual assault.
Stevens has been accused of waiting to call authorities for over an hour after his daughter was unconscious on October 3, 2020. He told police that the child fell in a bathtub. However, when the girl arrived at the hospital, lifeless, signs that she was sexually assaulted were evident. This includes blood in her diaper.
Physicians stated that the child’s death was caused by blunt force trauma to her head. They noted that she had been shaken and slammed into something at least two times.
Prior to contacting 911, detectives say that Stevens performed an internet search on “infant not breathing,” and “how do you know a baby is dead?” He was also texting a woman in a flirtatious manner, at that time.
But, Stevens’ attorney, Evan Kelly, has requested that jurors not jump to conclusions. He said there aren’t any witnesses, a reason, or evidence suggesting he killed the child.
