Prisoner Rescued Others After Factory Collapsed

Marco Sanchez is a prisoner who was working in a candle factory in Graves County, Kentucky, last year. He was a part of a work-release program.

On Tuesday, Sanchez was awarded the “Sheriff’s Meritorious Award.”

On December 10, a tornado struck the factory, and eight people died, and many others were hurt. Sanchez suffered a broken leg and fractured ribs in the collapse of the location but was able to get out and help others.

“There was a girl there trapped, crying, ‘Help me, I’m trapped.’.. I used common sense,” Sanchez stated.

An employee of the factory, Kyanna Parsons-Perez, was buried below five feet of debris.

Sanchez was also praised for not attempting to leave. He traveled to a hospital to be treated for his wounds. He saw an officer there and told him who he was. Since the officer couldn’t deal with the matter at that time, Sanchez caught a shuttle to a shelter.

After finding out that the jail was totally destroyed, Sanchez was put in contact with jail staff, and he was apprehended again.

A judge ruled upon a ‘shock probation’ which would permit Sanchez to go free because of his celebrated actions and decisions. But, he decided to finish the remainder of his sentence.

“I thought because of what I did that led me to incarceration. It was something that I did. I deserve to do the time,” Sanchez said.

On March 1, Sanchez will be freed and will be seeking employment and a residence.
