Suspect Breaks Bottle Over His Head During Attempted Robbery; Police Open Fire Shooting Suspect In Neck
On Saturday morning, Matthew Correa, 27, and a woman were driving in a Chevy Tahoe, in Winter Haven, Florida.
They then stole a pickup truck at a grocery store and held a man at gunpoint for cash at a tire shop.
Later, authorities located and surrounded the red truck, and Correa pointed his rifle beneath his chin and told officers to kill him.
The suspect then came out through the sunroof, holding the gun in a threatening position. He went back down in the vehicle and then stood up, holding his weapon in one hand and a beer bottle in the other.
Correa hit the bottle on his forehead, causing it to break. One officer, who was behind the man wasn’t able to see the bottle, shot Correa in the neck, believing he heard a gunshot.
Correa was transported to a hospital. He suffered non-life-threatening wounds. It was noted that Correa will be taken into custody upon his release.
No one else was hurt in the occurrence.
Correa has a criminal record that includes three felonies. He also was previously imprisoned in Florida for five years.
