After a teenager was wrongfully arrested in relation to a shoplifting and shooting occurrence in a suburb close to Chicago, the family wants an apology from the police.
Martell Williams, 15, was a part of a basketball game at his high school at the time that he was initially suspected of stealing and shooting a worker at a dollar store in Waukegan, Illinois.
However, he was taken out of his classroom last week for the crime that happened on February 4.
“Once I reached the office, there were two officers there. As soon as I got in, they didn’t tell me nothing,” Williams stated.
His relatives and lawyer say that detectives attempted to get the teen to confess to the crime.
“Try to bribe him with McDonald’s saying, ‘Look. Just tell us you were there. They don’t even tell him about the shooting. ‘Just tell us you were there, and we will have you home in ten minutes,'” the attorney, Kevin O’Connor, stated.
As a result, Williams was held in the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center, facing attempted murder and aggravated battery charges.
But, the teen was freed when he and his family were able to prove that he wasn’t near the store at the time of the shooting.
The Waukegan Police Department has expressed their concerns in the matter and has dropped all charges.
“They need to apologize and say he didn’t do this and that they were wrong for what they did. That has to happen immediately,” declared the family’s lawyer.
