Sivert Klefsaas’s mom, Lorna, made a deal with her son when he was 12. If he stayed off social media until he turned 18, then she would give him $1,800.

His mom named it the “18 for 18” challenge.

Sivert was described as a very competitive kid. He acted as if the challenge was a sports game that he was gonna win.

Last week, Sivert celebrated his 18th birthday, and because he kept his promise, he earned $1,800.

Lorna said that she couldn’t think of a better way to use her money. She remembered the struggles she had with her older daughter and social media.

“She was so obsessed…it was affecting her friendships,” the mom said. Eventually, she took her daughter’s phone, and three weeks later, her daughter was thanking her. However, she didn’t want Sivert to have the same issues.

Sivert stated that the journey was hard at times, especially hearing stories from his friends about social media that he couldn’t witness. But, he says not having social media helped him stay focused on grades and sports.

On his 18th birthday, Sivert got himself an Instagram page, feeling he is now mature enough to manage it.

Since Lorna posted this experience on her Facebook page, she says that many moms have reached out to her, hoping to do a similar challenge for their kids.
