Stuart Mouchantaf, 27, an ex-Rice University football player, was sentenced to federal prison for distributing a deadly synthetic opioid.

In 2020, Mouchantaf pleaded guilty to giving carfentanil to Blain Padgett, 21, who died of an accidental overdose in 2018. Padgett, his teammate, was a recognized football player who had his eyes on the NFL.

The Department of Justice stated that Mouchantaf was given 12 years in prison as his punishment. This will be followed by three years of supervised release.

U.S. District Judge Sim Lake stated that the sentence was needed to keep others from committing the same offense.
