On Thursday, a gang in Brooklyn was apprehended for gaining unemployment benefits in a fraud plan.
Kennith Desir, Stephan Dorminvil, Kai Heyward, Keith James, Oneal Marks, Jahriah Olivierre, and Christopher Pierre have been charged. Roleeke Smith and Christopher Topey have been charged, too. They are accused of conspiring to commit access device fraud. They are also charged with aggravated theft.
The money they received was funded whole or partially by COVID-19 pandemic assistance. All the men are in their 20’s and reside in Brooklyn.
Police are still attempting to locate Olivierre.
Documents note the males are members of the Woo-gang. In 2020, they are said to have used personal identification from 80 people. They then turned in about 1,000 unemployment benefit claims. They did so by submitting the information to the New York State Department of Labor.
The men filed for nearly $20 million in benefits and received $4.3 million.
During this same time frame, they were uploading photos on social media. They could be seen showing off in front of expensive cars and brandishing stacks of money.
Some of the gang members were featured in a music video, “Trappin.” It appeared on YouTube in 2021. The song contains one line that reads, “Unemployment got us working alot.” This is allegedly referring to the fraudulent behavior.
