Former Pastor Receives 23-Year Sentence For Running Over And Attacking Estranged Wife With A Machete

Victor Mateo, the ex-pastor of The Redeemer Church in the Bronx, New York, parked outside of his estranged wife’s apartment on October 3, 2019.

As she, Noelia Mateo, walked outside to transport her two grandchildren to school, Victor hit her with his car. Noelia then went to escape by retreating under her car. Victor then got inside of her vehicle, running over her many times. He then retrieved a machete and struck her with it numerous times while the grandchildren observed what was happening. Victor was accused of hurting Noelia if she ever left him.

After being on the run, one week after the occurrence, Mateo was apprehended.

In November 2020, Mateo pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder. Since a plea agreement was reached, Victor will now serve 23 years in prison. Additionally, he will get five years of post-release supervision and finalized orders of protection. These orders ban Victor from communicating with the grandchildren who saw him commit the killing.

“Victor Mateo stole my grandmother and my innocence. I lost so much within a few hours. I had nightmares and PTSD,” stated Noelia’s 13-year-old grandchild.

Victor Mateo was also charged with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. However, those charges were dropped as a component of the plea deal.
