A 25-year-old Florida woman is facing charges after she kept her daughter “caged” inside of a hotel room.
Patricia A. Childress, who had a warrant issued for child neglect at the time of the incident, was taken into custody Thursday.
Authorities say Childress kept her young daughter “caged” inside of a pitch-black closet in her hotel room. She was charged with one count of aggravated child abuse as aggravated assault. A charge of child neglect without causing great bodily harm was also laid on her.
Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of Childress’ location at an unidentified hotel. Childress was staying in a room with a man named Marshall Day and her two young children. Marshall Day was also wanted on the same child neglect charges. The children were only identified as a young boy and a young girl.
Deputies arrived at the hotel and conducted a protective sweep, searching for the two children. They were only able to find the little boy, who was sleeping on one of the two beds.
Investigators then noticed that a heavy bin was intentionally placed in front of the closet to keep it shut. The deputy then reportedly removed the bin and found the little girl inside of the closet.
The little girl had been locked inside the closet with a small blanket and pillow. The child was sleeping in a shirt with no pants and a diaper full of urine and feces. She had no light, toys, or any items accessible to her.
The deputies conducted an interview with Childress. Childress justified keeping the young girl locked up in the closet, saying she only put the girl in the closet when she sleeps.
When deputies asked the little boy how the girl can get out of the closet, the boy said, “If the cops are coming..we will let her out.”
Childress was booked in at Brevard County Jail Complex. She was released a few days later after posting her $17,000 bond.
