On Wednesday, Ureka R. Black, 33, was indicted for second-degree murder in the death of her 10-month-old child, Joshua C. Black and the attempted murder of his sibling. His brother is not named because of his age.
The Louisiana mother’s mental evaluations have been analyzed as prosecutors decided if she has the mental capability to stand trial.
On Friday, September 24, 2021, Black threw both of her kids over the Cross Lake Bridge.
Around 11 a.m., a yard worker contacted authorities after witnessing a child face-down in the water, close to the bridge.
Emergency crews arrived and first found baby Joshua. They tried to revive him but were unsuccessful. He died at the scene.
A little while later, Black’s 5-year-old son was located in the water, floating on his back. His was rushed to a medical facility with severe injuries.
When authorities found that another child may have drowned, they searched for more than three hours. Then, they learned that the third child was safe, someplace else.
Detectives say that information from the surviving child assisted them in naming the mother as the person who committed the act.
An officer in Waskom, Texas, saw Black’s vehicle at a rest stop after the occurrence. She was apprehended without incident and hasn’t received a bond.
Black is now being held in the Caddo Correctional Center.
