42-year-old Leah Gorham, of Canada, quit her nursing job at a hospital in 2021 after working there since 2006. She is now employed by GTL Transportation, Inc.
One reason for the career change was that a university wouldn’t let her finish her nursing studies. Another reason was that she was assaulted by a patient. She believes that if there was enough staff, the assault would have been prevented.
Gorham also expressed that the pandemic has taken a toll on many nurses.
Now, after listening to her boyfriend, who is an independent truck driver, Gorham has started to work with him. She has signed up for a 12-week program and enjoys the challenges of driving the big rigs. She is even driving through the United States where she hasn’t come in 20 years.
Simultaneously, hospitals across the country continue to deal with exhausted staff that is dealing with the effects of the omicron variant.
Although she has chosen a different career, Gorham still hopes many nurses continue working in the medical industry.
“I want the work conditions to improve for nurses and support staff. I hope they don’t lose the love…for the job like I did. We need them. Nurses deserve to be safe,” Gorhman declared.
