Lauren Smith-Fields, 23, was found deceased in her residence in Connecticut.
Now, her family has filed a lawsuit against the Bridgeport Police Department, citing a mishandled investigation.
On December 12, Fields was discovered unconscious after connecting with a man she had initially met on the dating app, Bumble.
The man, Matthew LaFountain, found her body.
He told authorities that the two had been consuming tequila. He stated that Fields began to feel sick but then felt better.
LaFountain stated that Fields went outside to give something to her brother who had texted her. When she came back in, she stayed in the bathroom for 10 or 15 minutes.
Around 6:30 a.m., LaFountain stated that the woman wasn’t responsive, and blood was coming from her nose.
However, the woman’s brother said he hadn’t texted his sister in weeks, and she didn’t seem intoxicated that night.
The family is also upset because they were told by authorities that LaFountain was a very nice guy and wouldn’t be investigated. They noted that LaFountain is described as an “older white man,” and Smith-Fields was Black.
Smith-Fields’s mother said that authorities have told them to stop contacting them. She added that detectives left crucial evidence behind at the scene, like a condom and a pill.
The dating app, Bumble, hasn’t released a statement, and many are calling for a boycott of the app.
The family wants an independent investigation conducted into Smith-Fields’s death.
