On Monday, the United States Mint said that they have started shipping quarters with Poet Maya Angelou’s image. It is the first coins in their American Women Quarters Program.

In 1969, Angelou rose to fame with the published text, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.”

Angelou passed away in 2014 at 86-years-old. She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010 by President Barack Obama.

The quarters reveal Angelou with her arms stretched out. In the background, a bird is flying and the sun is rising. It shows images motivated by her poetry.

“This coin will ensure generations of Americans learn about Maya Angelou’s books and poetry. They spoke to the lived experience of Black women,” stated Senator Catherine Masto of Nevada.

Other women that will be honored this year include Sally Ride, the first woman astronaut, and Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Nina Otero-Warren, a trailblazer in New Mexico ‘s suffrage movement and Anna Wong, the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, will also be recognized.
