In August, Joseph Sobolewski, 38, saw a sign at a gas station that said they were selling two Mountain Dews for $3.
He got one 20 oz. bottle and placed $2 on the counter. The actual cost for one was $2.29 not $1.50. Therefore, he was short 43 cents.
After a worker called authorities, Sobolewski was found and apprehended. He was kept in jail for seven days on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Previously, he was charged for stealing a pair of shoes and not paying for a tank of gas.
In Pennsylvania, once someone has stolen something three times, the last offense must be a felony despite the amount that was taken.
Now, the felony charges against Sobolewski, who is homeless, have been dropped. When he found out this information, he exclaimed, “That’s great news. I feel like I was treated unfairly because I have a record.”
For the crime that was committed, Sobolewski was looking at up to seven years in prison.
