A 17 year old boy was killed during a standoff with police Thursday afternoon in Wichita Falls.
Officers responded to an assault call around 7:40am on the 2500 block of 8th St.

Upon arrival they learned that Gabriel Varella,17 struck his mother in the face before they arrived.
She said she was able to get out of the home but her son had barricaded himself inside.

SWAT was called out to the residence to try and get the suspect out the home.
After several hours of negotiating officials obtained a warrant for the home and forced their way in.

Once officers gained access to the home Varella opened fire striking an officers shield.
No officers were injured.

He then tried to flee out the back door where he was confronted and shot by officers.
Varella was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wichita Falls Police Chief Manuel Borrego says none of his officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the incident.
This investigation is ongoing.
